In Tongues

It's understandable to assume that Oakland, California's Drunk Horse falls into the 'vintage-tour shirtwearing' set that is all over the latest issues of your favorite magazine. After all, singer/guitarist Eli Eckert is quick to list ZZ Top (pre-'Eliminator') as a prime "stylistic motivator," but in the same breath the group's leader mentions the Melvins, Jesus Lizard, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Miles Davis.

In Tongues is their fourth album; the first two were released on Man's Ruin, and 2003's Adult Situations was released by Sweet Nothing Records. This latest bombshell on Tee Pee records shows the band to have their sights pointed towards the future, as well as over their shoulders. In Tongues is a mighty follow up to the wellreceived Adult Situations, and features Horse regulars Eckert, bassist Cyrus Comiskey, and drummer Cripe Jergensen. Another integral part to how the album turned out is the collaborations from ex-Fucking Champ Josh Smith and multi-instrumentalist Joe Rubino. Having recently wrapped up a series of pre-release shows at SXSW and along the West Coast, Eckert asserts that the new songs take on a new dimension on stage: " It's a whole different animal live. "
