9 loaves, 5 fishes
Tuner have recorded a collection of tunes that you think you’ve heard before - but certainly not like that.
Akin to current Sartorial release Shadow Cat by Robyn Hitchcock (who, incidentally, introduced the band to the label), this CD consists of would-be vinyl releases. 9 loaves is the mini-album that never was, recorded at Gizzard in London’s East End, whilst 5 fishes is the 12” EP of early recordings that also exists only in Tuner’s fertile imagination. With music played on proper vintage instruments, recorded on magnetic tape in wide, 60s-style stereo, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d got this pigeon-holed, but bear in mind Tuner have performed with Can’s Damo Suzuki and are joined here by saw player Ruby Wright (of folky outfit Oli ‘n’ Clive on the Trial & Error label) and the serially ubiquitous brass player Terry Edwards and you know you have to scratch deeper... As with all Sartorial records, the packaging speaks volumes - look out for the model of a football playing Christ and you know you’ve come to the right place...
