The Secret Garden Volume 1
A good fifteen years on from the untimely death of the original shoegazing scene this lost genre returns as nu-gaze. As a champion of what is new and what is strange Invada records fights the corner of this up and coming form of music.
For the uninitiated, shoegazing first appeared in the late eighties spearheaded by bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Ride and Slowdive. It dominated the indie scene for roughly three years before Britpop and the dance scene conspired to kill it off. It's based around heavily distorted guitars, vague lyrics and smudged vocals. It has a melancholic edge, which can be strangely uplifting. A growing media interest in this music and a proliferation of bands playing in this style indicate that this will be the next big thing, The thoughtful and introspective nature of the genre is perhaps the antidote to a dumbed down music scene dominated by haircuts with guitars. This compilation is a scratch on the surface of a vibrant scene, which spans the globe. It brings together thirteen bands with a common passion for this style of music, some artists are rather well known already, others are unsigned. It is put together so as to acknowledge variety within the genre and will appeal to new fans as well as those of the original shoegazing movement.
