Living In A Giant Candle Winking At God
Take a mix of the founding members of Ambient House whose revolutionary music changed the lives of a generation, put them together with A-list musicians and programmers and throw in a pinch of comedian for good measure and what do you get?
A kaleidoscopic banquet of anthems that makes dance music exciting and ambient again. That's what.Alex Paterson (The Orb: sonics, samplers, sequencers), Jimmy Cauty (KLF) Guy Pratt (long-standing post-Waters Pink Floyd bassist: bass, guitars, percussion, Indian flute, vocals) and Dom Beken (Orb programmer/producer: programming, keys, drums and percussion, bass, guitars, harmonica, shouting) all met up in 2001 at Gunpoint, the studio built by Guy and Dom at London's Townhouse. This album, Living in a giant candle winking at God, is the result of that collaboration. With a history of ignoring convention and changing musical expectations, this collective' proved irresistible to guests such as Johnny Marr (ex-Smiths) and Simon Day (The Fast Show) and they happened to be in the vicinity at the time too, which helped. On January 1st 2004, Transit Kings followed Basement Jaxx on stage at Tokyo's biggest New Year Party in front of a 7,000-strong crowd and it was clear that this was a project to be completed. A second show at 2005's Big Chill had the audience po-going with delight. A short film to accompany the title track, starring Simon Day is currently in pre-production. And, in typically, unconventional style, Transit Kings will release three 7" singles in traffic-light vinyl - red, amber, green - in sequential order.
