What’s Kickin’ Vol 5
“What’s Kickin’ could be the soundtrack to my show!” Mark Lamarr
After much deliberation, Stovepony Records is proud to announce the release of the fifth volume in its groundbreaking What’s Kickin’ series of compilations. Established in 2005, What’s Kickin’ captures the heart and soul of East London’s now famous What’s Cookin’ club, for nine years a haven for all that’s great in country, blues, folk, pub rock and more, featuring nineteen studio-recorded tracks (many of them exclusive) from bands and solo artists that have played the club – and some that are on their hitlist!
Capturing a snapshot of the UK Americana and roots rock scenes like no other release available anywhere, Volume 5 features tracks – ten of them exclusive! - from already established acts such as Charlie Parr, The Nightingales, The Lucky Strikes, Otis Gibbs, Cowbell, the Broken Family Band’s Steven Adams aka The Singing Adams and Lucas Renney of The Golden Virgins. Bringing up the rear are up’n’coming acts Benjamin Folke Thomas, The Treetop Flyers, Italian roots rock kings Lowlands (featuring You Am I’s Tim Rogers), new Stovepony signings Molly’s Daggers and Lucky Strikes frontman Matt Boulter in solo guise as The Whispering Pines. Madrid’s garage rock demons Los Chicos even deliver a song about their What’s Cookin’ experience! Located at various venues over the years and now comfortably inhabiting its own pub, The Birkbeck Tavern in Leyton, What’s Cookin’ has a formidable reputation for hosting early gigs by such well-known acts as Pete Molinari, The Jim Jones Revue, The Broken Family Band, Southern Tenant Folk Union, Smoke Fairies, Damien Jurado, She Keeps Bees and many more.
