South London Boroughs EP
Re-released to coincide with the release of his full-length debut CD, Burial's quickly sold-out 4 track EP from March '05 genetically modified the original dark swing code of dubstep mapped out by the likes of Steve Gurley and El-B.
His luscious grime-fuelled 2step syncopations emerge from the urban smog with subliminal melodies drenched by ominous dread, while deep-fried lovers rock beamed back from 2012 sparks and cracks across the gap between underground garage and Berliner dub, casting audio spectres of Rhythm And Sound on amphetamine.
"both leading tracks seem like the perfect marriage between techno and garage / early dubstep. Revisiting shuffled rhythms favoured by the likes of el-b and zed bias, the tracks push deeper still with soundscapes reminiscent of basic channel or chain reaction records. More of an inner ear rocker than a dancefloor damager but excellent all the way. 5 / 5." - idj (grime / dubstep single of the month)
"hyperdub keeps on pushing the echo-and-reverb boundaries of dubstep. Standout track 'southern comfort' blasts air horns over a grayed-out bass pulse and a horn sample lost out in the cold; 'broken home' has jerky drums rubbing against an unintelligible vocal sample in a way that's nearly unpleasant but rewarding. Complicated for hearts and feet." - idj (dancehall / dub page)
"launched by kode 9's renegade cyberdub cell, 'slb' raises the bar, and ups the chill factor considerably, exploring infinite fathoms of sonic depth for rootical ravers. If the idea of pole exploring 'my life in the bush of ghosts' at 135bpm excites, this collection of ice cool atmospheres and equatorial fever pitches will leave listeners in a cold sweat. Look out digital mystikz and horsepower, there's a new kid on the block, who's killing it. Burial by name, soundmurderer by nature, dubstep has been atomized. Blissful." - xlr8r
