The Warlocks

Occasionally things get a bit more wired, as on the awesomel rollicking "Cavemak Rock." Bomp supremo Greg Shaw is known to be a big fan of these guys, so they'd get my vote even if they didn't have the class to close their album with a 12-minute, 35 second workout entitled "Jam of the Warlocks." - Big Takeover

Lurking beneath the ultra-Hawkwind-style cover art is one of the most intriguing little records to come along in quite awhile. Warlocks frontman Bobby Hecksher has been floating around the Left Coast scene for some time, working with both the Brian Jonestown Massacre and Beck. This 40-minute EP is the first taste of a new band that knows what it wants. Deconstruct the Warlocks' sound, and you'll find that it's not at all what you'd expect, given their instrumentation and image. With no less than four guitarists up front, you might expect either super-heavy rock or perhaps the churning Southern fervor of the Outlaws. Add two drummers, and you'd almost certainly expect such a din to emerge that you mught just contemplate checking out their set outside the club. In truth, the Warlocks' skinsmen provide a throbbing, gentle pulse over which guitars are layered to mesmerizing effect. Seven people may be playing at once, but Warlocks is actually kind of trance-inducing, achieving a heavy sound without resorting to mere high-volumed clatter. That is, except for "Jam of the Zombies", which builds to "A Day in the Life" crescendos and features some serious beyond-the-dead fuzz guitar freakouts. - CMJ report 01
