Alan Lomax In Haiti

In december of 1936, Alan Lomax arrived in Haiti to collect music. Lomax, with his soon to be wife Elizabeth Lyttleton Harold (they were married in haiti), and his assistant Révolie Polinice collected 50 hours of field recordings over a period of four months, from 1936 through 1937. This incredible collection provides a broad picture of haitian traditional music at the time.

The recordings included urban and rural genres, such as merengues, haiti’s rustic troubadour music, mardi gras, carnaval and other celebration music, voodoo music, children's songs, songs from the french tradition (including romances, canticles, and contredanse), songs of labour and leisure, and worship songs. Much of this is only now available to the general public for the first time. This 10 CD box set also includes an extensive booklet illustrating lomax's attempt to capture the spirit of this rich culture that has been so often challenged by adversity.
