Things Grow There
The band are : Anna Knowles – guitar, vocals / Grace Denton – vocals, accordion / John Boursnell – keyboard, accordian, vocals / Mat Riviere - drums, keys, melodica, vocals / Stuart Vallance – cuatro. The Middle Ones, who have been winning hearts and ears wherever they play, finally release their debut, a track single in hand made scrapbook sleeve. The Manchester and Norwich based 2 (but sometimes 5) piece are the unaware heirs to the legacy of the Marine Girls, Melody Dog, the Fence Collective, and even a little Magnetic Fields, or a touch of a lofi Warpaint. They play innocent, slightly-delic indie folk, with heart warming harmoines, the occasional toy instrument, and mountains of charm. So lo-fi and entirely acoustic that it finds a home somewhere between K and Bicycle Records. Definitely Olympia-based, a throwback to the acoustic-twee era with an injection of pop and, no surprise, total greatness.
The Middle Ones are more than just adorable — they’ve got the depth and bite that run throughout all of my favorite at-first-glance-gentle British pop.
