Makes Mojo's Underground Album of the month - Jul 05

DEVENDRA BANHART'S FAVOURITE NEW YORK SINGER-SONGWRITER

Although the American new-folk underground may he making inroads towards mainstream consciousness in the shape of artists like Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom, Diane Cluck seems to he doing her best to stay off the scanner. With three selfreleased albums to her name so far, while this fourth is gifted us by a label proper, that it's in an edition of just 500 copies (exquisitely hand-made) suggests Diane is not looking for an audience but rather waiting for them to find her. And for those prepared to do a little digging for their gold, Oh Vanilla/Ova Nil is bona fide treasure. Across 11 tracks of sparse, home recorded song-craft Diane demonstrates how little shc needs to put the world on hold: just a voice, a guitar and some of the most spdlhinding of words you'll hear anywhere.
