Songs about love, death and cold war politics
Somewhere in that space between the crack smoking death disco dollies masquerading as punk bands, the Coldplay-inspired pub warblers and the metal-lite emo artists, We Will Be Pilots formed in London in early 2004. They play short, sharp songs that shout about love, death and Cold War politics.
Their first demo tape was entitled How To Survive A Nuclear Attack and was recorded in the heart of Soho. It tapped right into the energy of the city and fititngly sounded like a nuclear attack - at least, if guitars were cruise missiles and ears an insignifanct peace-loving nation. Oh yes....
We Will Be Pilots are: Pilot Dan (screams and plays guitar), Pilot Jamie (plays guitar and avoids screaming), Pilot Bob (taps bass and falls over) and Pilot Ben (hits things hard and loud).
Unlike those macho wankers in Top Gun, none of them are qualified to fly jets.
A slew of loud and chaotic gigs across followed in a frantic few months. The We Will Be Pilots track We Are Not The Doctors, appeared on Jetplane Landings Smalltown Americas Public Service Broadcast #4 compilation series, they played the Love Music, Hate Racism festival in Hackney and influential website DrownedinSound - who count Razorlight, Bloc Party and Kaiser Chiefs as recent discoveries - got involved. As the band put it: "We used to piss in their front garden a lot and they asked us to stop. So instead we invited them out for a few lager shandies and theyve been following us around ever since...."
Plans are now underway to cause trouble throughout the UK during 2005.
This is just the first line of the first chapter.
Take heed.
