They dont sound like an ordinary band, because they are not an ordinary band.

After the release of two highly acclaimed albums (8 Track Sound System_ and The Autumn: Winter Collection) and two equally acclaimed singles (8 Track and Super Chimpanzee) released by The Village in the year 2000, the Fondas are finally back with a new album, Number 1 Hi-Fi Hair. This was preceded by the release of a new double A-side single: Computer Freaks of the Galaxy/The Colours And The Birdsongs.

After such an energetic start to their career in 2000 it may seem strange that 01 was apparently barren. Certainly there was no shortage of live shows... and for those who witnessed them, there was no shortage of new material. The shows too were often brilliant and occasionally dismal, but never the same twice, and included a successful tour of Holland. One of the most prolific songwriting partnerships in the UK remained active and produced some of its finest material to date.

So against a backdrop of positive things starting to happen for one of our finest bands it was back to the 8-track for the recording of the new album. Whats new is the Truck tie-in, a publishing deal with Mutesong and high levels of interest among various TV production companies - the new series of Teachers is liberally scattered with choice Fonda bits.

As ever, the album is none generic, but hangs together beautifully as a coherent listen. The tunes include huge chugging bastards, pastoral symphonies, Japanese counting songs, eighties cheese, spacehopper wigouts, gorgeous Pale Blue Eyes type things and instrumental passages that would be the ideal accompaniment to adverts for feminine hygiene products. A kind of Nu Pop Nonsense, but held together by strands of pure pop genius.
